How to tune a ukulele

An online ukulele tuner listens to each string through your microphone and tells you whether it is sharp or flat. Press Start, allow mic access, and play one string at a time. The big note shows which string you are nearest; the needle and the cents number show how far off you are. Tighten the string to raise the pitch, loosen it to lower it, until the reading sits at zero and turns green. No microphone? Tap any string on screen to hear its reference tone and match it by ear.

Standard tuning is reentrant high-G

Standard soprano, concert and tenor ukulele tuning is G C E A, and it is reentrant: the fourth string is a high G4 that sits above the C4 and E4 strings instead of below them. That is why the tuning is usually written g C E A — the lowercase g is a reminder that it is the high one, not a low bass string. This bright, jangly re-entrant sound is the classic ukulele voice, and it is this tuner's default.

Accurate and private

Pitch detection runs entirely on your device with the same autocorrelation engine as our chromatic tuner — nothing is uploaded. Nylon strings stretch a lot when they are new, so re-check the tuning after playing for a few minutes. When you want a tuner in your pocket, the free Tuner: Guitar, Violin & Bass app does the same on iOS. Also tuning a guitar, bass, or violin? We have a tuner for each.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tune a ukulele?

Press Start and allow microphone access, then play one string at a time. The tuner shows the nearest note and whether you are sharp or flat in cents; tighten or loosen the string until it reads zero and turns green. You can also tap a string on screen to hear its reference pitch and tune by ear. Standard ukulele strings are written g C E A.

What is standard ukulele tuning?

Standard soprano, concert and tenor ukulele tuning is G C E A. It is reentrant: the G is a high G4 that sits above the C4 and E4 strings rather than below them, which is why it is often written g C E A with a lowercase g.

What is the difference between high-G and low-G?

High-G (reentrant) tuning uses a high G4 for the fourth string, so the pitches do not run strictly low to high across the neck — this gives the ukulele its bright, jangly sound. Low-G swaps that string for a G3 an octave lower, adding bass and giving a linear range from the lowest to the highest string.

How do I tune a baritone ukulele?

A baritone ukulele is tuned D G B E, the same as the top four strings of a guitar. Choose the Baritone tuning here, play each string, and tune D3, G3, B3 and E4 until each reads in tune.
