How to tune a bass

An online bass tuner listens to each string through your microphone and tells you whether it is sharp or flat. Press Start, allow mic access, and pluck one string at a time. Bass strings sit low — the open E is around 41 Hz — so give each one a clean, sustained pluck and let it ring; a firm, steady note reads far more reliably than a short, muted one. The big note shows which string you are nearest; the needle and the cents number show how far off you are. Tighten the string to raise the pitch, loosen it to lower it, until the reading sits at zero and turns green. No microphone? Tap any string on screen to hear its reference tone and match it by ear.

Standard tuning and beyond

Standard four-string bass tuning, low to high, is E A D G (E1 A1 D2 G2), with the low E string vibrating at about 41.20 Hz. This tuner defaults to standard and includes the tunings bassists reach for most:

Accurate and private

Pitch detection runs entirely on your device with the same autocorrelation engine as our chromatic tuner — nothing is uploaded. The detector resolves down to about 31 Hz, so a 5-string low B works fine as long as you pluck it cleanly and let it ring. Fresh strings drift as they settle, so re-check after playing for a few minutes. When you want a tuner in your pocket, the free Tuner: Guitar, Violin & Bass app does the same on iOS. Also tuning a guitar, ukulele, or violin? We have a tuner for each.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tune a bass guitar?

Press Start and allow microphone access, then pluck one string at a time with a clean, sustained note. The tuner shows the nearest note and whether you are sharp or flat in cents; tighten or loosen the string until it reads zero and turns green. You can also tap a string on screen to hear its reference pitch and tune by ear.

What is standard bass tuning?

Standard four-string bass tuning is E A D G, from the thickest (lowest) string to the thinnest (highest): low E1, A1, D2 and G2. The low E string vibrates at about 41.20 Hz. This tuner defaults to standard and also offers Drop D, 5-string and half-step down.

How do I tune a 5-string bass?

Choose the 5-string tuning, which adds a low B string below the standard four — giving B E A D G. Pluck the low B cleanly and let it ring; at about 30.87 Hz it is the lowest string, so a firm, sustained note reads most reliably.

Does it work for low B?

Yes. The engine resolves down to about 31 Hz, so a 5-string low B (about 30.87 Hz) works — just pluck it cleanly and let it ring so the tuner has a steady, sustained note to read.

Is the online bass tuner free?

Yes, completely free with no signup and no ads. For tuning on the go, the MusePulse Tuner app for iOS does the same thing in your pocket.
