How the timing test works
Press Start and a metronome counts you in for one bar, then keeps clicking at a steady tempo. Your job is simple: tap once on every beat, in time with the click, using the spacebar or the tap pad. After the run the test looks at where each of your taps landed and turns them into two honest numbers.
- Consistency — the spread of your taps, written as a ± millisecond figure. It measures how tightly you repeat, not how close you are to any absolute reference. Tighter spread, steadier player.
- Tempo drift — the trend across the run. If your taps creep earlier you are rushing (speeding up); if they slide later you are dragging (slowing down); if they hold, you’re rock steady.
The chart plots every tap around your own average. Dots above the line landed ahead of your center (rushing side), dots below landed behind it (dragging side), and the sloped line is your drift.
Why we don’t show “milliseconds off the beat”
Every device adds a little delay — the keyboard or touchscreen registering your tap, the speakers producing the click. That delay is roughly constant, so it shifts all of your taps by the same amount. It vanishes from your consistency (a spread) and your drift (a trend), which is exactly why those two are trustworthy in a browser. But it does not vanish from the raw distance to the beat — so an online test can’t honestly tell you that you play, say, 40 ms late. We refuse to fake it. Measuring your true offset needs calibration, and that’s what the Rhythm Challenge app does: it calibrates your device and listens through the microphone to grade every note early, late, or dead on.
How to get tighter
Run the test a few times and watch the spread. Then practice against the free online metronome at a comfortable tempo, subdividing the beat in your head, and come back. What does the timing test measure?
Two things. Consistency is how tightly your taps cluster, shown as a ± millisecond spread — smaller is steadier. Drift is whether you speed up (rush) or slow down (drag) across the run. Both are read relative to your own playing, so they stay accurate even though every device adds some latency.
Is a browser timing test accurate?
For consistency and drift, yes. Any fixed delay your keyboard, touchscreen or speakers add shifts every tap by the same amount, so it cancels out of the spread and the trend. What a browser cannot measure honestly is your absolute distance from the beat, because that fixed lag is baked in — so this test never claims it. What is the difference between rushing and dragging?
Rushing means you push ahead of the beat and the tempo creeps up; dragging means you fall behind and it sags. The test spots this as drift — if your taps land progressively earlier through the run you are rushing, and progressively later means you are dragging.
What is a good timing score?
A consistency spread under about 15 ms is metronomic, 15–25 ms is tight, 25–38 ms is solid, 38–55 ms is loose, and above that there is room to grow. Most people are looser than they expect the first time — steady practice with a metronome narrows the spread quickly.
